I feel happy and satisfied attending the Workshop on Harmonization of MPOB Codes of Practice(CoP) at MPOB HQ in Bangi for the past 3 days. The refresher course conducted by an experienced Consultant for MPOB is indeed an introduction to the world of technical auditing for me. I now understand why any industry see the need to get themselves audited - more so to improve on their work processes in order to cut costs, maintain a good public image. For MPOB, it is to assist the palm oil industry of Malaysia to produce Sustainable Palm Oil. Once the Board achieve its goal of becoming a Certified Body(CB), it would be in a better position to compete with RSPO(Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil) to guide all organizations in the palm oil supply chain in the country to practice quality management sytems, hence to produce good quality products and services. I personally feel that MPOB should stand tall, despite various challenges and threats posed by RSPO and other green NGO's, being the most authoritative body on the oil palm / palm oil.
Personally, it was wonderful for me to meet up old colleagues who are still serving the organization with loyalty, dedication and a fierce sense of belonging to the organization, the same feeling I had before I retired way back in 2005. Becoming an auditor in MPOB is one way for me to serve the Industry again and this is what I would like to do while I still can for Palm Oil........

Golden Age of Palm Oil

The other day on ASTRO, there was a documentary and interview with Datuk Seri Lim Keng Yaik, the former Minister of Primary Industries on Palm Oil. Despite his retirement from the industry years ago, this man is still passionate about our Golden Crop. My personal opinion is that he had been the champion of palm oil during his Ministerial days, after taking over from YB Datuk Paul Leong Kee Siong during the mid 1980's. In fact, the period of mid 80's till 2005 was the golden age of palm oil, to my mind. It was during this period that PORIM (now MPOB) made such a big impact in the edible oils and fats industry in the world. We made breakthough discoveries on the nutritional values of palm oil, fighting off the Anti Palm Oil Smear Campaign waged by the American Soyabean Association(ASA) with the positive results MPOB obtained from the research grants given to various established Universities all over the world to conduct research on palm oil. MPOB then was the premier research institute on oil palm and palm oil, true to its Mission and Vision statement. For the past 5 years, MPOB gradually lost its oomph somehow, even though Malaysian Palm 0il remained as the No 1 Oil in the world. (Pardon me, if I am wrong). Leadership plays an instrumental role in the rise and fall of an organization. It is Leadership also that make or break an organization.

Whenever we are in London, we never miss going to Portobello Market, claimed to be the world's largest antique market. Great Britain is a very old institution, hence it is antiques galore every weekend at Portobello Road. Then we are off to Windsor to visit the world famous Windsor Castle. While walking through Windsor, I noticed a very effective advertisement by McDonalds which says "Our beef is reared on British and Irish Farms" - very interesting indeed. It is a known fact that, McDonalds is a very good patron of Malaysian palm oil. Hence, British meat and Malysian palm oil are good partners in the snackfood industry, feeding the whole world with their finger lickin' burgers and French fries.

On a trip to Guangzhou, China, organised by PUSPANITA last week (Feb 24-28), I observed that our Malaysian Palm Oil made its prescence significantly. China is one of the bigger traditional markets for our Golden Oil, importing thousands of tonnes of palm olein to feed millions of her population. Kentucky Fried Chicken(KFC) is using palm oil mainly to fry the French fries and the finger lickin'' good chicken. PUSPANITA, the Association of ladies and wives of the Malaysian Civil Service, made a social visit to the Malaysian Consulate General, located at Citic Plaza in Guangzhou. Other places of interest is Makam Abi Wakas, Sahabat Rasullullah(S.A.W.), which we visited during Maulidur Rasul (Prophet Mohamed's Birthday). The group of 20 members also made a shopping trip to Shenzen (about 2 hours drive from Guangzhou) at the Louhou Shopping Complex - everything under the sun is sold there. Overall, we have had a wonderful time in Guangzhou, reminding me again of our beloved Prophet Mohamed's statement, " Tuntutlah ilmu sehingga ke negeri China". It is wonderful to know that Islam is still very strong and still enjoy a very big following in certain parts of China.

The Truth (about Palm Oil) has Prevailed!

"The truth has prevailed!" said Tan Sri Yusof bin Basiron, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) in the very informative documentary on palm oil produced by the Asian Food Channel Productions aired over ASTRO on 5 October 2009. AFC did a wonderful job of boosting up the good image of palm oil in their documentary entitled Palm Oil : Good Fat, Bad Fat. The authentic truths about palm oil, its health attributes, its versatility and the excellent frying qualities of the oil, the environmental-friendliness of the product has been revealed by various experts in the field, ranging from producers and actual consumers, from environmentalists, chefs and man-in-the-street. R&D also showed that palm oil is just as good as the age-old olive oil. In fact, many foreigners interviewed did not know about the existence of palm oil and are not aware that palm oil is used in almost all the daily products that they consumed everyday, from fries to creamers and soaps to cosmetics. Palm Oil has actually conquered the whole world!
