Last nite, we went to see Lewis Pragasam's Asiabeat & Friends Concert at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas and it turned out to be one of my best musical outings so far for the year. To me, it was music at its best! Of course, Lewis was in his metal with his drums. But it was his guest, Tengku Ryo from Indonesia, who stole my heart. With his violin, he mersmerised the audience with his rendition of traditional Zapin Melayu music fusing it with the beat of the Tango. It was fantastic! This young fellow had a story of his life to all his fusion numbers - mixing the sounds of the violin with the trombone, tabla and the drums, with back-up sounds of the piano, guitar and the keyboard. Then there was John 'Kaizan' Neptune, playing the Japanese flute and his home-made tabla of some sort. Local singers include Zainal Abidin and a young local group Caprice.
To me, Lewis Pragasam applied reserach and development(R&D) in the music discipline, integrating the beautiful sounds of specific musical instruments to produce new music. Kudos to Lewis and Asiabeat!

R and D and Business

I read with interest an article in The Star "Change mind set about research, says Dr M". Tun Mahathir always make headlines with his words, including this one regarding R&D progress in Malaysia. He rightly said that, "Research is not about making profits. This kind of thinking is not up to date." He said further that research was all about acquiring information and making discoveries. He said one of the things Malaysia must do was to set up incubators for young people with ideas to create new things. This, he said, was important as the country had moved away from the labour intensive industries of the past into brain intensive industries. He said local investors should be nurtured and allowed to grow as world-class entrepreneurs. Syabas Tun M!

MyIdeas Portal and IdeasBank in MPOB
I read with some interest today on the Government's move to develop the MyIdeas portal. The portal aims at receiving ideas and suggestions from the public on how to tackle the economic, social and technological challenges faced by the nation. These ideas will be showcased at the 2010 Year of Creativity and Innovation. "Excellent ideas will be developed further by scientists, and the final idea patented or copyrighted to the original proposer," said Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.
A very commendable idea, I must say because this is actually what MPOB had done way back in late 1990's. Our Director-General then, Tan Sri Yusof Basiron, developed the IdeasBank to invite the researchers and staff to come out with ideas on how to maximize usage of the oil palm and palm oil. The Secretariat collected numerous ideas and the good ones are implemented by the Organization. Of course, the proposer of these innovative and implementable ideas are being rewarded for their good efforts.
The Nation can't wait to see this portal to be launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia come July 8.
